What Do We Really Know About the Buddha?
When considering the lives of history’s most influential figures, names like Jesus and Muhammad often come to mind. But what about the Buddha—was he a historical person, or a figure of myth? In his new book The Buddha: Biography of a Myth, renowned Buddhism scholar Dr. Donald S. Lopez Jr. explores this question and examines what is at stake in the answer.
Drawing from the earliest biographies, the work of other scholars, and his own research, Dr. Lopez reconsiders the Buddha’s life story in order to “remythologize” the figure and reflect on enduring questions in the study of Buddhism.
