Would you like to learn from a university professor and published expert on ancient Christianity in a dynamic online class with other Religion for Breakfast fans?

Then register now for Dr. Travis Proctor’s new 8-week seminar, The Historical Jesus, starting Monday, September 29th at 2:00 PM EST!

Designed for beginners or anyone interested in digging deeper, this class explores how historians study Jesus of Nazareth as a figure of history. You’ll examine the earliest sources, analyze his teachings and deeds, and tackle big questions like: Did Jesus really exist? Was he married? Why was he crucified?

You’ll gain tools in historical analysis, understand the Greco-Roman and Jewish contexts of Jesus’s life, and engage with controversial debates — all in an engaging, accessible environment.

Dr. Travis Proctor

A first-generation college graduate and scholar of the bible and early Christianity, Travis Proctor received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill, specializing in ancient Mediterranean religions. His teaching and research focus on biblical studies, early Christianity, and environmental studies.

His work has appeared in academic journals such as the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Journal of Early Christian Studies, Harvard Theological Review, and the Journal of Ecclesiastical History, as well as public venues including Bible Odyssey, Religion for Breakfast, Religion Dispatches, The Bart Ehrman Blog, and the “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” podcast.

His first book, Demonic Bodies and the Dark Ecologies of Early Christian Culture (Oxford University Press), explored how early Christian theorizations of demonic bodies influenced ancient understandings of cosmic “ecosystems,” and how such historical perspectives may inform contemporary environmental ethics. He is currently working on a book on early “apocryphal” traditions that regarded Jesus as an animal, plant, or “inanimate” object.
